General Practice Community Pharmacy Consultation Service (GP CPCS)

The Community Pharmacist Consultation Service was initially launched October 2019 as a referral pathway from NHS 111 and since 1st November 2020, GP practices are able to refer into it. The pathway was successfully piloted in five areas around the country. 88% of referrals were completed by the pharmacist and 97% of patients who used the service said they would do so again. The Midlands region found that the referral pathway has the potential for 6-10% of practice appointment capacity to be effectively directed into community pharmacy.

Patients contacting a practice with a minor illness for a GP appointment are offered a same day consultation with a pharmacist and with the patient’s consent, a secure electronic referral is sent from the practice to the community pharmacy of the patient’s choice. The pharmacist will contact the patient to arrange the consultation with reference to NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries tools embedded in the care record. A post consultation message is sent to the practice after completion and saved to the EPR.

At present across the Midlands we have 199 GP Practices live and referring into the CPCS. Across the region there have been 9200 referrals made, with each referral freeing up a 10 minute appointment slot with a Practice GP or Nurse. This equates to over 1533 hours retained in GP Practices.

From October 2021 GP CPCS will form part of the Impact Investment Fund and PCNs will need to confirm that they work collaboratively with local community pharmacy colleagues to develop and commence delivery of a plan to increase referrals to the Community Pharmacist Consultation Service, with referral levels increasing by no later than 31 March 2022 (56 points).  Additionally from April 2022 PCNs will need to evidence that they use GP CPCS to improve patients access to primary care services through referrals to the Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (at a requirement of 0.65 per 1000 per week)(27points). With winter fast approaching and with it the additional pressures this places on primary care, we wanted to take the opportunity to email out to all Practices to highlight the benefits of signing up to this service, to be live, referring and freeing up capacity in general practice.

NHS Lincolnshire CCG Launches DIP UTI Service in Community Pharmacy

Dip UTI Pilot - New Diagnose and Treat Service

NHS Lincolnshire CCG has partnered with Healthy.io to pilot a UTI test and treat service in community pharmacy. This will reduce the need for patients to book primary care appointments for simple UTIs. The Dip UTI service is available in Lincolnshire Co-operative Pharmacies and provides eligible patients with a free urine test kit to take home and an app to download onto their phone which will guide patients through the testing process. The app uses the smartphone’s camera to deliver clinical-grade results in less than 5 minutes. Patients can then share their results with a Co-op pharmacist to receive the appropriate care, including antibiotics if needed, via a Patient Group Direction (PGD).

The Dip UTI pilot starts on Monday 6th September in Lincolnshire Co-operative Pharmacies. Please mention the service to patients calling your practice with simple UTIs as they may wish to visit their local Co-op Pharmacy instead of booking a primary care appointment.

Benefits of the service:

  1. Better care for patients - immediate solution to treat UTI without the need to book a primary care appointment.
  2. Helps alleviate pressure on primary care.
  3. Patients can be referred as part of the GP Community Pharmacy Consultation Service (GP CPCS).
  4. The antibiotics included on the PGD are in line with the Lincolnshire Joint Formulary.

Please notice that the service is intended for simple UTIs, and therefore fits women aged 16-64 who*:

  • Are not pregnant
  • Do not suffer from recurring UTIs
  • Do not suffer from diabetes
  • Do not have visible blood in their urine
  • Do not have fever or flu-like symptoms
  • Do not have a catheter
